There are several sources for Free Talking Books.
Free talking books or podcasts are usually in mp3 format - so you need an mp3 player to be able to play them. You can also sync these with your iPod using iTunes
Librivox - Volunteers read out of copyright books as Talking Books in mp3 format. The files can be large, so you probably need broadband to download them, and a broadband downlaod limit with reasonable limits (ie not 400mb per month!)
Literal Systems - also read by volunteers, but more recent readings of the Talking Books ar made by paid professional talking book readers. All Literal Systems talking books are free.

Why listen to Talking Books?
Human Beings have long had an oral tradition, or put differently an Audio tradition.. As Hunter Gathers 20,000 years ago we used to sit around the campfire listening to stories. Stories were passed on from generation to generation. The invention of the printing press put a stop to a lot of oral tradition, but the Talking Books brings it back. Adults and Children love having stories read to them. Talking Books are in that Hunter Gather oral tradition.
Talking Books offer more opportunity to "read" a book. You don't have to sit down to read a book, you can listen to an audio book on the move. You can listen to Talking Books when you are doing something else. Many people get terribly car sick (well car sick, bus sick, plane sick...any kind of motion sick), and for them there is no way to read a book while in a car or a bus (or anything moving). An audio book is fantastic on along car/bus/plane/boat journey. The just time flies as you are taken away on an imaginary journey that is just like reading (except you can keep you eyes closed).

Tape Talking Books have been around the longest. Advantages are, that they are very robust. You can have them rattling around in your car for long trips and play them many times, and they will be fine. Libraries lend out Talking Books in tape format for this reason. Some older titles are only available on tape. Disadvantages are, that new books are harder to get in tape format now. If you can get Talking Books in tape format they are harder to get, and sometimes will only be in abridged format.
Talking Books on CD
Talking Books on CD are now the most common Audio Book format available online, and are generally easier to obtain than Tape Talking Books. CD Talking Books can also be converted to mp3 format. Unabridged Talking Books are more commonly available now online, resulting in some very large books now being available in Talking Books format - for example Eldest by Christopher Paolini is 20 CDs! totaling 23.5 hours of Audio Book!. Harry Potter Talking Books also have between 10 and 20 disks. The disadvantage of Talking Books on CD however is that despite what we were told when CD's where introduced years ago, they are not very tough. You need to keep the CD's protected, and I suggest that when you travel with a CD Audio Book you buy a separate CD holder with soft sleeves that you can protect your CD Audio Book with. They are better protection than the boxes the CD Talking Books come in. Some Language Learning Talking Books come with a CD holder included
Digital Downloads
Talking Books that are are downloaded from online services like iTunes and Audible are fine, but have some drawbacks. They have strong digital rights protection which means you can only play them on certain players. If you download from iTunes you can only play your Talking Books on your iPOD, and you cannot give your audio book to anyone else, because it will not play on their iPOD. The Talking Books that many Talking Books download sites list are not always available to Australians. You might find a new US title that you like, only to find it is not available to Australia, and may not become available for several years. Some publishers do not allow their Talking Books to be available in downloadable format, so the range is not as great..
