About the Author: Fidel Castro led a group of young Cubans in attacking the Moncada military barracks on July 26, 1953, to initiate a popular uprising. The rebellion was brutally suppressed and Fidel was captured and sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment, during which he was barred from holding public office. Within six years, he had overthrown the dictatorship and Fidel became Prime MinisterIgnacio Ramonet is director and editor of Le Monde Diplomatique, a French monthly published in several languages with an international circulation of 1 million. He is the founder and president of French ATTAC, a key organization in the anti-globalization movement and a major player in the World Social Forum. A professor of media studies at the University of Paris VII, Ramonet is the author of several works about the media and geopolitics.
