L. M. Boston's thrilling and chilling tales of Green Knowe, a haunted manor deep in an overgrown garden in the English countryside, have been entertaining readers for half a century. There are three children: Toby, who rides the majestic horse Feste; his mischievous little sister, Linnet; and their brother, Alexander, who plays the flute. The children warmly welcome Tolly to Green Knowe? even though they've been dead for centuries. But that's how everything is at Green Knowe. The ancient manor hides as many stories as it does dusty old rooms. And the master of the house is great-grandmother Oldknow, whose storytelling mizes present and past with the oldest magic in the world. Review: "British actor Vance's full-bodied and inviting performance infuses this good-natured fantasy with the kind of charm likely to hook Harry Potter and Narnia fans. Young Toseland (Tolly for short) isn't sure what to expect when he is sent to spend a holiday with his Great-grandmother Oldknow in her huge castle of a house in England. He arrives in the middle of a flood, and feels as if he is climbing aboard Noah's Ark, which sets the stage for this unusual adventure. Soon Granny is telling Tolly about Toby and the other children (and animals) who sometimes come to the house, 'when they want to.' Listeners and Tolly learn that Toby and his full-of-energy siblings Linnet and Alexander are ghosts; they died during the Great Plague. Magic, mystery and fun will bring listeners along for an entertaining ride, even if they may not always be sure where the ghosts begin and real-life leaves off. Vance's characterizations of comforting Granny and inquisitive, excitable Tolly are engaging throughout. Five subsequent titles — all inspired by the author's restoration of an English manor house in 1930s Cambridge — are also available on audio. Ages 9-up. The raspy, whiskeyed voice (a bit reminiscent of Harvey Fierstein) of Locorriere, former lead singer of pop band Dr. Hook, is a swell match for Silverstein's posthumously published long-in-the-works collection of Spoonerisms. These fun-to-hear and fun-to-say ditties about a rabbit's experiences and friends ('Runny Shearns to Lare,' 'Runny's Nicpic' and 'Runny Bakes a Tath,' for example) will largely have kids giggling, as well as trying to puzzle out the pairs of words whose initial letter sounds have been swapped. And Locorriere assuredly reads the nonsense words and rhymes without slipping up — an impressive feat. All ages. Singer-songwriter Sherwin, who garnered warm praise for his two Dream with Me Tonight lullaby compilations, changes gears for a more energetic family music outing. The new collection offers slightly older kids a tour through a variety of music styles, largely country-rock and folk, via 12 original tunes. The stellar 'A Cappella,' performed with a doo-wop sound ('Just use your voices to make the noises/ That trickle into your ear,/ A cappella is a beautiful sound to hear') kicks off the proceedings on a decidedly upbeat note. The typical subject matter thought to have kid appeal — bugs, monsters that chase away bad dreams, picky eaters, suffering through a sibling's birthday party — prevails, but Sherwin's soothing, friendly vocals and some quality musicianship should keep a broader family audience pleasantly fortified. Ages 4-9." Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)
