The Amazon rainforest, 1827. The Doctor, Amy and Rory arrive in the jungle near a hurriedly abandoned campsite, where they are surrounded by hungry black caiman - huge lizards. Only the arrival of a man with a rifle sees off the giant beasts.

The TARDIS materializes in a tropical forest, and the Doctor, Steven and Dodo are surprised to find that it's situated inside a vast spaceship. This is the distant future, and the last survivors from Earth are on a 700 year voyage to the planet Refusis II. Accompanying them are their mute, one-eyed servants: the Monoids.

Two things arrive on the same night in Central Park, New York, 1976. The first is a fireball from space, bringing with it a new identity for one Alice Trefusis. The second is the Tardis, carrying the Doctor and his friends on the trail of an unusual comic book cover. The Doctor's strength is sapped by something in the New York air.

Donna Noble is back home in London, catching up with her family and giving them all the gossip about her journeys. Her grandfather is especially overjoyed - he's discovered a new star and had it named after him. He takes the Doctor, as his special guest, to the naming ceremony. But the Doctor is suspicious about some of the other changes.

The TARDIS, carrying the Doctor, his granddaughter Susan and the two schoolteachers Ian and Barbara, materialises on board a drifting spaceship in the 28th century, in orbit around a planet called the Sense-Sphere. As the crewmembers wake from a catatonic trance, the TARDIS' door lock is stolen by two shadowy aliens also on board.
