When Northwest Airlines realized their flight was compromised, they were ordered to make an emergency landing and then removed from their aircraft. Following that wake-up call, Joe sought the help he needed and by 1994 (just four years later) was asked to speak at a National H.I.M.S. conference on his struggle with alcoholism. He was a pilot without a license to fly; and with a broken heart.
